A Pear (Pyrus pyrifolia N.) is a popular fruit in Korea and has been used as a folk remedy for constipation, cold, fever, cough, etc. This study was performed to investigate the potential of pear as a immune-modulating functional food by assay of splenocytes proliferation and induction of cytokine (IFN- ¥ã, IL-4) in vitro. When mouse splenocytes were exposed to various concentration (0.16, 0.31, 0.63, 1.25, 2.50 mg/ml) of heated pear juice (HP) without or with mitogens (Con A, LPS), splenocytes proliferation (SP) was significantly increased when compared with each control. When splenocytes were cultured with HP in the presence of T cell mitogen (Con A), IFN-¥ã and IL-4 levels in culture supernatant were significantly enhanced at 1.25 mg/ml when compared with control group. Therefore, our results suggest that the heated pear juice may have the potential of being an immune-modulating functional food. (Cancer Prev Res 13, 68-73, 2008)
